5 KEY PRINCIPLES OF CREATIVITY BY MARK BATEY
TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mission, “ideas worth
spreading.” It supports independent organizers who want to create a TED-like
event in their own community.
Mark Batey is a highly published researcher in
creativity. In his talk, Mark defines the subtle difference between creativity
and innovation. He then proceeds to break down the 5 key principles which
underlie these 2 phenomena. These principles have been applied and have changed
the lives of thousands of children, students and executives. The purpose of
this is to create awareness; and give the world a clearer idea of how to
implement the principles in order to explore new ideas and innovations and how
to use the technology
Creativity can come in many forms, and creativity
can be achieved, through acquiring different methods. But for those that seem
to procrastinate on things, this process of being creative doesn’t come in
easy. Well, here to help all those individuals is a summarized version of the
motivational speaker from TED Talk Mark Batey. With his approach, he clearly states that anyone can be creative
if he was to follow five fundamental principles. Recognize those principles,
adapt them, and start to experiment with the thoughts these principles may
bring to one’s mind.
The five key principles of creativity that he states
are:
CONNECTIONS: First key principle
that he states is the one we all tend to look at most times, and that is
connections. In order to achieve our goals quickly we need to connect the dots
together in our mind. By using an example of three different words he regulates
the crowds mind forcing, no! Helping them to think out new ideas on a
spot.
CHAIN REACTIONS: What happens when
you band together a group of people that present their connected ideas on the table?
You start a chain reaction. A reaction of ideas and innovative thoughts can
lead to something big.
DIVERSITY: The third key
principle he mentions is diversity, and when you look at the other two
principles together. You have made connections, you started a chain reaction of
innovative thoughts, now all you need is to diversify those thoughts and put
together a single one to present.
STREGNTH/WEAKNESSES: After diversifying
the ideas you have finally got a plan what now? You vary the strength and
weakness of that particular idea. He also states that in order to completely
grasp this principle one must always think of his strength as a weakness.
Because sometimes being too proud on one thing can become a flaw during
presentations.
CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING: The last key
principle where he ends the discussion is where he gave a heads up to the
spectators. Since most people tend to work in a group the only way to be more
innovative and more vigilant after following these steps is to sit down and
evaluate. By creative problem solving, he states that anything can be evaluated
quite quickly and can produce results on the positive side in a manner of
seconds.
