Blog 2- A Gel which stops traumatic bleeding instantly

The Invention of a Gel which stops bleeding instantly

Joe Landolina is a young, full time student at New York University, at age 17 he invented of a gel that can instantly stop traumatic bleeding — without the need to apply pressure.

He created a gel that forms a clot within ten seconds and permanently heals the wound within few minutes. The gel is made up of tiny individual plant polymers; the gel is injected into the wound site. Once it hits the damaged tissue, whether it's open skin or a biopsied soft organ like livers, kidneys, spleens — the gel instantly forms a mesh-like structure, this simply means that the gel will make a very strong adhesive that hold the wound on the skin together. In simple word, when applied to an open wound, Veti-Gel bonds to the surrounding flesh, forming a tight seal. Not only does the gel initiate the blood clotting process, it also speeds healing. On the other hand the mesh like a matrix structure helps the body produce fibrin at the wound’s surface. This fibrin basically helps to tissue to repair the wound over long term and after a few minutes of the application the gel can be safely removed.

The young inventor gave an example of a soldier to explain the use of the gel, when a soldier gets shot in the femoral artery he can die in 3 minutes to. If a medic gets to him, their tools take 5 minutes to stop bleeding, and require the medic to apply pressure throughout. Joe has been working on bio-products that work with the body to stop bleeding quickly.

Cells are the most basic unit of life, but these are surrounded by the extra-cellular-matrix (ECM) which is what is damaged during a cut. A scar is a symptom of poorly formed ECM. ECM is different for different parts of the body, so it is difficult to design a product that is compatible with all the different ECMs. Most technology is only a crude approximation of ECM, but Joe’s gel is derived from plant products and can re-form to replicate any type of ECM once applied. Wherever the gel is applied, it forms the shape it needs. He shows an example of a serious ‘cut’ in a piece of meat, with a pump pushing blood through it. By the time he finished applying the gel the bleeding is completely stopped within 10- 12 seconds, used as an alternative to stitches. Joe Landolina was able to instantly halt bleeding in mice with sliced livers and punctured carotid arteries during lab a test which was showed to the audience on a video. The product can be stored at room temperature and forms a protective coating over the wound to stop bleeding without the need to apply pressure, and it may even help heal first- and second-degree burns.

Joe is now the cofounder and CEO of Suneris, a biotech company that manufactures the gel and the product has been invented to be used on animals and humans both and it is named as Veti-gel.
